A 1984 report by Sodha, et al, in the International Journal of Energy Research, found that “evaporative cooling on the roof is the most effective technique in keeping room temperatures low without the use of mechanical air conditioning equipment.”

A water-cooled roof system also benefits buildings equipped with conventional air conditioning systems. In a 1991 article in Energy and Buildings, Zaki, et al, wrote that “evaporative roof cooling can reduce the cooling load by as much as 40 percent.” Drexel University researcher Sekhar Kondepudi wrote in a 1992 Energy Conversion Mgmt. article that “evaporative cooling has a positively beneficial effect on the reduction of cooling loads for a building.”
